Hello everyone! The background for this blog is that I just spent a great year living in Maine and working for the Maine Natural Areas Program, as well as hiking, swimming, sailing and everything else you can do in Maine. I met some great Maine people. I had some good Maine times. I love Maine :) But! I grew up here, and was feeling like I needed to spread my wings. Where better than in the South Pacific!
So, I am travelling to the Cook Islands on February 14th (happy valentine's day to meeee....), and then on to New Zealand on February 25th! I want to see new birds, learn about conservation methods in different countries, go "tramping" and visit old friends and places. This will hopefully be a great way for everyone to see what is happening with me, and for me to record my trip. My email that I will be checking is my gmail one, but feel free to leave comments on the blog as well. I will try to update once a week, at least ;) Haere mai!

Kate, I think it's awesome that you're doing this blog. I never get myself around to doing them and always regret it. I expect similarly fantastic stories and photos to '04! Can't wait to hear how it all goes. -Claire
